It didn't take long for Geena Davis to realize the impact of "Thelma & Louise" after it opened in May 1991.
It didn't take long for Geena Davis to realize the impact of "Thelma & Louise" after it opened in May 1991. "On the opening weekend, women would stop me in the store saying that 'The movie changed my life,'" recalled the Oscar winner ("The Accidental...

  7. Is Homeland Security spending paying off?

On the edge of the Nebraska sand hills is Lake McConaughy, a 22-mile-long reservoir that in summer becomes a magnet for Winnebagos, fishermen and kite sailors. But officials here in Keith County, population 8,370, imagined this scene: an Al Qaeda sleeper cell hitching explosives onto a ski boat and plowing into the dam at the head of the lake.
The federal Department of Homeland Security gave the county $42,000 to buy state-of-the-art dive gear, including full-face masks, underwater lights and radios, and a Zodiac boat with side-scan sonar capable of mapping wide areas of the lake floor.

  11. Toeing the party line

The event was pegged as the first major debate among GOP presidential hopefuls in 2012, but Monday night's gathering turned out to be less a clash of competing ideas than a rote recital of hoary political nostrums that Republican primary voters have made a litmus test of ideological purity. The candidates dutifully repeated the mantra of tax cuts and touted their conservative credentials on social issues such as abortion, gay rights and immigration. But there was little real passion in the give-and-take, which by the end of the event seemed more like polite dinner-party chatter than a discussion of matters of grave national import.

  17. Sarah Palin gets it right

Just when you thought the Republican presidential field was getting set, up pops the most mischievous force in American politics, Sarah Palin. The former Alaska governor — the real deal this time, not actress Julianne Moore channeling her for the filming in Maryland of the movie "Game Change" — dropped by Fort McHenry on Monday in a non-campaign stop in her non-campaign bus on her (wink wink) non-campaign tour of the East Coast, which ends, in what must be pure coincidence, in the first primary state, New Hampshire.
