The line markets aggressively to all demographics but it has been targeting middle-age and younger patrons with its "Get out there" campaign that highlights extensive on-board and on-shore activities ranging from glacier-trekking in Alaska to cave-tubing in Belize to biking through the vineyards of Croatia. "Bigger is better" is the company's unofficial philosophy. It has five 142,000-ton Voyager-class ships, each with a full-length basketball court and miniature golf course on its sports deck and an ice-skating rink in addition to its signature rock-climbing wall. It has taken other existing ships, cut them in half and dropped in a new huge center section as part of refurbishing projects. The "size" trend seemed to peak in May 2006 when Royal Caribbean unveiled the $800 million Freedom of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship with the capacity of handling 4,000 passengers. Two similar-sized ships followed soon after. But the company has ordered two 5,400-passenger behemoths in the new Genesis class. The company was created in 1968 by three Norwegian shipping lines and its first ship sailed in 1970. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993. In 1994, it completed a six-story office building for its world headquarters at the Port of Miami. Like their competitors, Royal Caribbean has been struggling with rising fuel prices, travelers' concerns about hurricanes and changing customer preferences such as a cooling market for Caribbean cruises but an upsurge in the demand for European destinations. The company is deeply involved in marine conservation programs both on ship as well as donating heavily to environmental organizations. Richard D. Fain is chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
