  13. Springfield airport conducts disaster drill

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.  That's what emergency departments did today at the Springfield-Branson National Airport for a mock disaster.  Plane crashes are very rare but since Springfield is a designated diversion point for American Airlines there is actually a higher risk of disaster.  The last major fatal crash in Springfield was in 1955 when 12 died.  Today dedicated make-up artists dressed-up volunteers to look like real life victims.  Several fire departments responded to the call with ambulances from Cox and Mercy.  Firefighters put out the fire and rescued a person trapped in the burning plane which was actually only a mannequin.  Springfield is required to have a mock plane crash every 3 years.  The FAA requires airports to conduct these drills, otherwise, an airport will lose its certificate to provide air passenger service.
