Hometown: Baltimore
Current members: John Allen, vocals, slide and rhythm guitar, bass and drums; Pat DeMent, lead and rhythm guitar; Steve Smeal, bass; Eric Dixon, drums
Founded in: 2006
Style: rock 'n' roll
Influenced by: Jet, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the White Stripes, Motorhead, the Electric Six, Kings of Leon
Notable: SR-71 drummer John Allen played nearly every instrument on the band's soon-to-drop first album, Broken Promise. After about 15 years with other bands, it's his first gig as frontman. At several shows earlier this year, audiences rocked hard and gobbled up the advance copies of the album.
Quotable: "I wrote this album thinking, 'Hey, I like this stuff, I think it's cool -- I don't know if anybody else is going to think it's cool,'" Allen said. "After doing the shows and having people buy the music, it's sort of validation."
